Humanitarian Assistance

The SJF will continue to provide emergency relief to communities affected by disasters here in Canada, particularly when PSAC members form part of the affected communities or are involved in disaster relief initiatives.

At the international level, immediate humanitarian aid will be channelled through experienced international agencies that have a proven capacity for delivery of emergency aid, while longer-term reconstruction aid will prioritize aid to union counterparts in the devastated areas, in order to strengthen the role of Unions and their members in long-term social and economic rehabilitation.

• Malawi: Support a Child Program
  
  Funds for the "Feed a Street kid" program in Malawi supported by the UNDE Local President, Dennis Sheppard.

• PSAC-SJF lends hand to workers' earthquake relief efforts in Pakistan
  
  The PSAC Social Justice Fund has approved a donation of $20,000 towards the earthquake relief efforts of the Pakistan Workers Federation (PWF).

• Health centre operational in Gonaïves
  
  The PSAC Social Justice Fund provided support for emergency relief in Haiti to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontiers (MSF).

• Hurricane relief for the Caribbean
  
  Several deadly hurricanes ripped through the islands of the Caribbean in September 2004.

• The PSAC Social Justice Fund for Tsunami Relief
  
  Boxing Day 2004 saw the worst natural disaster in living memory.

• Responding to the Darfur crisis
  
  There are now 2.2 million displaced people in the conflict affected area.
