Shifting Forces in Latin America Common Frontiers Symposium, Toronto, October 15, 2006South America is undergoing profound political change as a number of progressive governments are being elected throughout the continent. These governments represent a serious challenge to the ‘Washington Consensus' that promotes privatizations in tandem with a structural adjustment program in order to make a country fit for “free trade”. The progressive governments in the Americas are forging new trade and social links that will foster decent employment opportunities, defend quality public services and promote a different model of integration that builds on each country's strength. During the one day symposium, popular sector leadership from several South American countries were able to talk directly with Canadian union activists and community leaders, and relay their own first-hand experience in bringing about social change, e.g. oil for doctors in Venezuela; nationalization of gas resources and defense of water and other services in Bolivia; and social policy in Brazil. Canadian anti-poverty groups, labour organizations, universities, the press, women's groups and Aboriginal organizations were invited to attend the symposium. | | | Popular sector leadership from several South American countries speak directly with Canadian union activists and community leaders. |
